This Level 3 Obstructed class Class is based on the test methods developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Included in this offering is 24 hours of classroom and hands-on flight instruction. The Test Methods developed for aerial systems can be used to evaluate small uncrewed aircraft (sUAS) capabilities and sensor systems in addition to remote pilot proficiency. There are different levels available for performance evaluation, this course will cover Level 1 Basic Proficiency and also introduce Level 2, Open Lane.
NIST has created a comprehensive user guide, scoring forms, and apparatus targets that can be printed and placed in the test apparatus buckets. Participants will learn how to conduct test trials and implant them into their own training and credentialing programs. The NIST sUAS Test Methods have been adopted, or are under consideration for adoption, by the Airborne Public Safety Accreditation Commission, National Fire Protection Association, Civil Air Patrol, and ASTM International.
Participants must be experienced sUA pilots who want to hone their skills, evaluate sensor systems and/or proctor others. Participants must bring their own quadcopter style drone, capable of at least 15 minutes of flight time and equipped with a camera. At least 3 sUA batteries and a battery charging station is also required.
